Ruhpolding – enjoy a storybook summer between Lake Chiemsee and the Chiemgau Alps

The picture is exactly what comes to mind when people think of Bavaria: gentle hills traversed by the Weiße Traun River as it ripples like a string of pearls, crystal clear mountain lakes – and frescoes on the old town houses around a mighty baroque church. However, Ruhpolding is not merely picturesque, but also great for active holidays.

Ruhpolding is located in the south-east of Bavaria, in the middle of a lovely meadow landscape, between the gentle green mountains of the Chiemgau Alps. In the south, the Sonntagshorn (1,961 m) rises as the highest peak, and around 20 kilometres north-west is Lake Chiemsee, the largest lake in Bavaria. The people there are also typically Bavarian. Their awareness of their traditions is evident in the form of the clothes they wear and the dialect they speak: "Ruapading" is what the place is known as in the local tongue.

All around Ruhpolding, 240 kilometres of hiking trails of all difficulty levels are just waiting to be explored. In between, alpine farms with homemade dairy products invite you to take a break, and there is a three-lake world that lives up to its nickname "Little Canada". Hiking enthusiasts can climb the Sonntagshorn, the highest mountain in the region at 1,961 metres, or the Hörndlwand. Fans of waterfalls and families with children will be delighted by the serpentine trail behind the Staubfall, while Nordic walkers will love the Nordic walking circuits in the broad side valleys.

From Ruhpolding to the surrounding area

Due to its location only around one hour south-east of Munich, Ruhpolding is ideal for day trips to the surrounding area. If you stay overnight in Ruhpolding, you will receive the Chiemgau Card | Ruhpolding & Inzell free of charge. Use it to enjoy up to 30 attractions in Ruhpolding, Inzell and the surrounding area for free. These include museums, water parks and wellness baths, mountain railways, brewery tours, village and regional buses, trains and much more.

Less than an hour's drive away is Lake Chiemsee, known as the "Bavarian Sea", whose scenic beauty has captivated people for centuries. In 1873, King Ludwig II erected the enchanting Herrenchiemsee New Palace on the Herreninsel in Lake Chiemsee, which he had modelled on Versailles and whose splendour can still be experienced today. Since the 19th century, artists have also been inspired by the scenic beauty here. They founded the famous artist colonies on the Fraueninsel, which are still active today. One of these artists is Georg Klampfleuthner from the island pottery, who is continuing the work of his ancestors and to this day lovingly makes tiles for stoves and baths, as well as plates and many other ceramics by hand.

Munich is perfect for day trips. The Bavarian state capital draws visitors with its numerous historical sights and cultural highlights. Museums such as the Deutsches Museum or the Pinakotheken are perfect for culture enthusiasts. The Viktualienmarkt has been loved by residents and guests alike for more than 200 years for its special atmosphere. Here, between colourful market stands and a blue and white maypole, beats the heart of the city. When hectic city life becomes too much, you can recharge your batteries in the Englischer Garten, one of the largest parks in the world.

Munich is also a perfect gateway for flights from the UK! Lufthansa takes you there. Lufthansa offers 184 weekly flights to Munich from Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow, London City, London Heathrow and Manchester.
