1. Kitzbuhel, Austria, probably one of the best ski resorts in the world, is a beautiful, picturesque village with cobbled streets and horse-drawn sleighs. Several schools cater for all levels. A day pass is around £30. Check the snow before going. 2. Zermatt, Switzerland, has stunning scenery and a great view of the Matterhorn. Instruction is available for all levels. Apré-ski abounds, with top quality restaurants. There are 3 Swiss zones and one in Italy. A day pass costs around £50. 3. Chamonix, France, is a lovely village with lively apré-ski night life. It has 11 zones, including one of the world’s longest runs (Vallée Blanche). Plenty of instructors are available. A day pass is around £45. Use a guide - there are some dangerous slopes. 4. Aspen, USA, is for advanced skiers, but nearby Buttermilk has some of the best beginner slopes in the States and good beginner instruction. There are plenty of good shops and restaurants in the resort. A day pass is around £65. 5. Whistler Blackcomb, Canada, has the most ski runs in North America. The resort is not picturesque but does have good night life. Private instruction and guides are available. A day pass is around £65. 6. Lake Louise, Canada, is a scenic resort in a national park, so be careful not to bump into an elk between runs! It has one school with a very good reputation. It has lots of good night life. A day pass is around £55. 7. Mont-Tremblant, Canada, is a beautiful resort with lovely cobbled streets. There are 95 ski runs. The snow school has lessons for all levels. A day pass is around £50. 8. Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, has some of the most beautiful ski scenery in the world, together with great (but expensive) shopping. No worries about a lack of apré-ski here! There are some really good beginner slopes. You may need a taxi to visit them all. A number of local schools offer lessons. A day pass is around £35. Check the snow before going. 9. Vail, USA, has the largest ski area in the US, has plenty of atmosphere, and there is a lot you can do here when not skiing. Vail Ski School offers group and private lessons. A day pass is around £65. 10. Flaine, France, is not a pretty village, but it does have a wide range of slopes with plenty suitable for beginners. A number of schools offer beginner to advanced classes. A day pass is around £30.
