If you are only taking one holiday during the year, single trip
insurance is the cover to buy. You need to give the start and end
dates of your trip and the cover will apply between those dates but
cancellation cover will start immediately. Essential Travel allows
you to choose the policy best suited for your requirements. You have
the flexibility to exclude baggage cover or add winter sports or
golf cover. As long as you are a UK resident, aged 65 or under and
starting and ending your trip in the UK you can book a single trip
of up to 31 days.

When you are looking for travel insurance, check that the policy
matches the particular problems that you are likely to face. If you
dont have any kind of cover for your baggage you would not be
reimbursed in the event of loss of personal effects, including money
and your passport. As replacing a passport will require a visit to
the Consulate you may have to pay out for travel and accommodation
costs. Travel insurance also covers you in the event of your luggage
being delayed on your outward journey, helping with the cost of
buying replacement necessities.

Increases in cheap, no-frills flights have made European
mini-breaks more popular than ever. But impulse trips and weekend
breaks still need proper planning and adequate insurance cover,
otherwise the consequences can be serious. An Annual Multi Trip
policy will cover you for your main holiday plus any number of
shorter trips that you may want to take. You can opt to have cover
for 21, 31 or 45 days out of the country on any single trip and take
as many trips as you like throughout the year. An annual policy
allows you the freedom to travel at your own pace.

Backpacker policies are specifically designed for students
planning a gap year. Travelling the world and visiting new places
means that it is important for you to be fully covered. If you are
going to be attempting something potentially dangerous such as
white water rafting or abseiling you must be aware that such
hazardous activities are likely to be excluded and you would need
to make alternative arrangements to cover this. Most insurance
policies will cover you for the usual holiday activities such as
surface water sports, horse riding and scuba diving down to a depth
of 30 metres.

If you intend to ski or snowboard during the period of your
insurance you must select the winter sports option. Not only will
you benefit from the high levels of cover you will also be covered
for loss or damage to your ski equipment. If you have pre-booked
your ski pack prior to departure but are unable to use the
facilities due to medical reasons you would also be covered
Off-piste skiing within the resort is covered and you can ski
off-piste outside the resort as long as you are with a guide. For
most, the consequence of travelling without adequate insurance could
turn out to be merely a careless oversight, but winter sports can be
dangerous and medical costs high. Travel insurance will cover
helicopter rescue off the slopes if it is deemed medically necessary
and considering that one in ten skiers require some form of medical
treatment it will give peace of mind to have full cover.
